With over 19 years’ experience of directing government innovation policy and managing government backed RD&D programmes, Paul Durrant joined the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in January 2018 to lead on Innovation Strategy and Engagement.

Paul Durrant has a PhD in Nuclear Physics from the University of Southampton. For 7 years he was Head of Energy Innovation Policy in the UK Department of Energy & Climate Change which transitioned in 2016 to a role as Head of Energy Innovation Strategy and Engagement in the UK Government’s Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.

In the last few years Paul Durrant has worked extensively to strengthen international collaborations on clean energy RD&D and Innovation. He was the UK representative on the EU’s Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan Steering Committee and chaired the Committee’s Bureau and its Joint Actions Working Group, which brought together 18 EU member states to scope and develop multi-national collaborative programmes. From Autumn 2015 onwards he led UK engagement with the Mission Innovation initiative.
