João Torres is the CEO of EDP Distribuição (EDPD), the Portuguese Distribution System Operator serving more than 6 million customers. Currently, he also serves his second term as Chairman of EDSO for Smart Grids, the association representing distribution system operators (DSOs) providing more than 70 percent of the electricity consumed in Europe, and also leading the way to bring smart grids from vision to reality.
João Torres joined EDP in 1982. Before becoming CEO in 2006, he held management and executive positions in energy generation and distribution, human resources, healthcare services and training, including the creation of the EDP’s shared services company. In 2012, he also became a Board Member of EDP International.
Under his leadership, EDPD has been conducting several initiatives to deploying the innovative grids of the future, notably through its awarded InovGrid project and the InovCity of Évora, demonstrating the technological, societal and economical value of the smart grids implementation.
